Statistics for Epoch 258
Estimated number of blocks : 5.7
Block Allocated : 7
Blocks Produced : 7
Luck* : 121%
Blocks Predicted for the Next Epoch: 9
A decent epoch with seven blocks produced and even better for the next with nine allocated.
We were fairly busy this epoch as a new cardano-node (software that runs on servers to produce blocks and generate rewards) was released. This version was 1.26.1 and we decided to install it earlier that we normally do to see what the performance was like at the time causing problems in previous epochs which was two days after the start of an epoch where rewards were calculated which stopped the chain from processing transactions for ten to fifteen minutes. The two day issue is now mainly solved and there was no stoppage of the chain for that long so this looks like a great improvement. This also meant upgrading other infrastructure as well so we were kept busy but we are in a good place now.
The upgrade was done after all our blocks this epoch were processed so we still are waiting for our next scheduled block to ensure the new software is working fine and then we need to rotate some keys for security (KES) which need doing every three months. So once we know the new node is producing blocks we update the KES keys and then ensure again the next block is minted as expected. This was we are not making multiple changes and not knowing where the problem lies if we miss a block.
We have lost some more delegators and gained none after the few epochs of below expected returns which is to be expected although a little disappointing to see as we are making all blocks allocated to us and as seen in this epoch and the next we will be producing above average returns to average out the lows. This is expected due to the way blocks are allocated but it seems people assume the pool is not producing the blocks allocated and move away.
Well we will return at the end of the next epoch with our update so until then keep safe and happy staking!!!
* – Blocks are allocated randomly each epoch based upon total stake a pool has just like a lottery. Luck refers to how many blocks were allocated to a pool against the expected blocks that the pools should produce. Some epochs (5 day periods) you will be allocated more blocks and some less but over time it should even out.
