Epoch 234 – Ready for the HFC

Statistics for Epoch 234

Estimated number of blocks (Adapools.org) : 4.6

Block Allocated : 3

Blocks Produced : 3

Luck* : 65%

Community-driven stake pools are producing 68% of all blocks we continue the decentralisation process, the remaining 32% produced by federated IOG nodes. Estimated date for complete decentralisation of the Cardano blockchain is March 2021.

Well after our great result last epoch it’s back down to earth, we were allocated 3 blocks out of an estimated expected of 4.6. This is fine due to the randomised way blocks are allocated to pools each epoch and we just have to roll with it some you win some you loose and this is the same for all pools. The important thing to check is that the pool is making the blocks assigned to it.

We have had some work to do this epoch on the nodes as there was a new node 1.24.2 released. Going into a bit more technical detail the compiler used to compile the node software is also changing in the future from GHC 8.6.5 to GHC 8.10.2 (GHC – Glorious Glasgow Haskell Compilation System !?) so we upgraded to this release first and then built the node. The new software is required for the upcoming Hard Fork Combinator event currently due to take place on the 16th December …

From IOHK Twitter – “This morning, after extensive testing on our QA networks, we’ve successfully deployed Node release 1.24.2 to the #Cardano mainnet. This release supports the next Cardano protocol update (‘token locking’ HFC event codenamed ‘Allegra’) planned for 16 December, so looking good”.

Pools need to be updated to the latest node version in order to make it through the fork so the message is being spread in the pool operators telegram group.

This is the first of two hard forks with the first being token locking which has many uses but one of the first is to lock tokens for voting (to prove you had the tokens at a set date and they can’t be transferred to vote again). If you are interested more in the details please read this.

We are also now at the milestone of ‘k’ being 500 which means that ecosystem is setup for 500 pools. This will change in the future again to 1000 and the saturation level of all the pools will decrease further. This is supposed to help decentralisation but it seems the bigger pools just create X amount of new versions of themselves so that they still hold a large percentage of the ADA delegated.

That’s about it for this epoch and we’ll be back for a brief summary and the end of the next epoch and thanks to all who continue to stake with us.

* – Blocks are allocated randomly each epoch based upon total stake a pool has just like a lottery. Luck refers to how many blocks were allocated to a pool against the expected blocks that the pools should produce. Some epochs (5 day periods) you will be allocated more and some less but over time it should even out.
