Epoch 224 – Time for a bit of Housekeeping …

Statistics for Epoch 224

Estimated number of blocks (Adapools.org) : 3.3

Block Allocated : 4

Blocks Produced : 4

The majority of blocks (56%) are still produced by IOG(IOHK) – reducing by 2% per epoch.

A good epoch with the pool being allocated just above the expected amount of blocks and all of these were produced.

Regarding the pool we did a bit of housekeeping in rotating our KES (“KES” stands for Key Evolving Signature) as this key was due to expire in a few days. This is the first time we have done a KES key rotation since the pool was setup so this always introduces the chance that you did something wrong in generating the new keys and node certificate. Happily as we now have the script that lets us know when blocks will be allocated to us this meant after the change we could monitor the next block and ensure it was made to ensure the key rotation was successful. Previously we had no idea if we had been allocated any blocks and as such you could wait a few epochs before you confirmed there was a real problem. So all went well and the block was produced so we know the rotation was successful and we now have another 92 days until we need to renew the keys again.

Other than this it was a pretty quiet epoch. We have one relay where the time syncronisation can sometimes be lost – we use a program called chronyd to keep the clocks on all our nodes synced tightly to core internet node atomic clocks and try and maintain a few milliseconds of accuracy. This is needed as if you nodes drift our of sync too much blocks will be rejected. We are investigating the issue and monitoring closely.

Thanks to all of you who continue to stake with us! We are enjoying running the pool and are always looking for ways to improve performance. So far we have made all the blocks allocated to us, this will not always be the case as the protocol does allocated multiple pools to occasionally produce the same block and this is decided upon randomly which pools gets the credit for the block. Anyway onwards to Epoch 225 and hopefully we hear more about Gougen (next week) in the end of month IOG update. Happy Staking all!
